Seize the day, and put the least possible trust in tomorrow.
The quotation rang through his head, urging him on. If it was good enough for a revered philosopher, it was good enough for the likes of him. And it offered one hell of an excuse to do what he burned to do anyway.
He hurried off to the library. He had a debt to collect.

The squeak of a floorboard behind him set Caleb’s heart pounding. He whirled around so quickly, the heavy book almost lurched out of his grasp.
He peered into the shadows at the far end of the hall. Nothing moved. There was no breeze, no flicker of light, no swish of fabric to suggest there was anyone else in the hall outside Zadie’s room.
He clutched the book to his chest. It had been a decade at least since he’d skulked about a house after dark. Now he remembered why.
It was damned inconvenient.
What did he think he was playing at? Getting entangled with Zadie Whitlock would be the height of stupidity. She was impatient and impulsive and far too uncontrollable for his taste. They went together like treacle and fish.
But she was also extraordinary. Volatile and exciting and effervescent. A combination he could admit he had no idea how to handle.
Caleb checked the dark hallway. Still deserted. He could skulk back to his own room and pretend he’d never suggested this. Spontaneity wasn’t his strong suit. He never made a move without calculating all the possible outcomes, weighing risks against benefits.
Morning would bring clarity. But that would do sod all to relieve the aching in his balls.
Just the thought of her beautiful breasts, the feel of them against his chest as they kissed, made him even harder. The memory of her shuddering as she found her release in his arms made his jaw clench. Next time, he vowed, he’d be inside her when she came.
And with that thought spurring him on, he knew he was lost. He groaned softly, tucked the heavy volume under his arm, and knocked on the door. It opened immediately. She must’ve been standing on the other side all along.
He thrust the book at her. “I’ve heard Horace is a good choice for insomnia.”
She took it, letting her fingers brush the backs of his hands. “That may be, but I know a better solution.”
Her voice, low and sultry and full of wicked promise, vibrated straight to his staff.
He inched into the room and closed the door behind him, turning the key in the lock. With his back pressed against the door, he studied her. In her filmy borrowed nightgown, she fit there, among Ada’s fine furnishings. She’d turned the lamp down until it offered a golden glow, softening the hard edges of wardrobes and cabinets and lengthening the shadows, creating an air of mystery. Unreality.
Caleb fidgeted by the door. “This is a bad idea.”
“A spectacularly bad idea,” she agreed. “And yet here we are.”
She set the book down on top of the dresser and turned around to face him.
